Notice of Motion – change of constitution

For the coming members meeting on 11/11, our church secretary, Ada Chau, provides us the followings as the notice of motion:
—————————————————————————————————————–

Background

HCBC Church Constitution 6 (a) Termination states:-

“The tenure of office of a Pastor may be terminated by two month’s notice in writing by either the Church or the Pastor”.

“Upon attaining the age of sixty-five years the Pastor shall retire from the Pastorate except, however, he may remain in office after that age by annual vote of the Church”.

The Deacons put forward the motion to remove the second half of the above clause. The reasons are as follows.

  1. After consulted with the Secretary of Baptist Union NSW, Alan Soden, he advises that this clause is against the current Australian Anti-age discrimination laws and should be removed from the Church Constitution.
  2. We have also consulted Rev. Stephen Li, a representative of Chinese Baptist Churches. He agrees that there is a need to remove this clause.
  3. The sample church constitution of the Baptist Union does not have this clause.

Notice of Motion:

To remove the clause below from HCBC Church Constitution:

6 (a) Termination: “Upon attaining the age of sixty-five years the Pastor shall retire from the Pastorate except, however, he may remain in office after that age by annual vote of the Church”.

The following clause remains unchanged, “The tenure of office of a Pastor may be terminated by two month’s notice in writing by either the Church or the Pastor”.

Please be advised that this is an amendment of Church Constitution so that it is consistent with the Australian Anti-Age Discrimination laws.  All church members are encouraged to attend and vote in the Meeting.
